Title: Newb Stories and Newb Levels
Post by: Iliessa on December 06, 2008, 12:44:01 AM
Alright, out with it! Everyone has done or witnessed something newbish at some point and most of us continue to do newbish things to this day. Lord knows I do. Lets hear your stories!  :D

I'll start us off:

The other day I was in AV on my Shammy and made it through to Drek's area. We destroyed the remaining horde there and tagged the RHGY. A warrior that had gotten his face smashed in whispered me asking for a res. Unfortunately I was still being shot by the archers in the East and West towers so I told him sure, just had to wait for combat to drop. So we wait... and wait... and about 2 minutes later my combat finally dropped. I start to res him and see the little green light, and when the spell completes I get a loading screen. WTF!! I'm standing in Aldor Inn with the 15 minute deserter debuff. I used Astral Recall instead of res.  :'(

Yeah, so I have moved my little shammy hearth far FAR away from my res button now. Oh I felt like such a newb. Now that I'm done being embarrassed about it, I think it's funny. Feel free to point and laugh next time you see me!

So I think it would be fun if we started a Newb Level system. Every time someone in the guild gets caught doing something of a newbish nature like that, the rest of the guild congratulates the poor soul with a Newb Level. We'd just need the officers to stick everybodies Newb Levels on their main toons character info in the guild tab.

Grats! Your skill in Newb has increased by 1! Level up!

When you hit level 15 I will buy you some [wowitem]Tigule and Foror's Strawberry Ice Cream[/wowitem].  :D

But until then, lets hear some of your previous most newbish moments!

Where to begin, where to begin...

I've had Fie for about four years now, so there are -plenty- of noobish things to choose from >.<

My introduction to "Crowd Control" came wayyyy back when I'd played for all of a week, and was running Deadmines with my boyfriend at the time (who had three 60s(!!!!!), something I couldn't get over) and a pug mage. I was "tanking" (ie. running around like an idiot and smacking things with my paws), swipe-spamming and generally making a nuisence of myself. All of a sudden this sheep appears! I pay no attention to it, continue along my merry way, and of course break it. This happens a good half-dozen times before the mage, frustrated with good reason, yells at me: "STOP BREAKING MY SHEEP!!!" I ask my boyfriend what he meant, and received a "You're not supposed to hit those..." in reply. Such was my introduction to CC.

I also never realized what a priest's shackle was (I'd seen one on the same DM run, I was on with my bf) until several years later when I was in kara and shadow said "[name of priest X] please shackle star". Definite "Oooohh, so THAT'S what that is" moment there.

My first character was a mage. When I hit level 10, I saw the tip that I got a talent point and spent it. Fast forward to to level 30 or so. Another mage said "I'm fire, what spec are you?" So I read off each and every talent point I had in the arcane tree, wondering where he got these magical fire talents... all of mine had to do with arcane missiles and stuff...I looked a little more closely at the top of the talent tree and realized that there were 3 tabs to choose from!

So I immediately respecced fire. Doing SM Cath, someone said "mage, you have the longest range and are highest level, pull the mobs inside the cathedral."  Knowing nothing about aggro, I fired up my biggest pyroblast to pull each mob (this was back when it was a 10second cast and had a cooldown). I died every time I pulled. I knew it was the warrior's fault since he was supposed to be tanking  :P

Then Panzer introduced me to duels. He had a warrior of the same level. I used arcane missiles and fireblast because they did the most damage. No frost nova. No sheep. No blink.

When I first rolled a horde char, I made a troll. You start off as Neutral with Undercity if you create anything but an Undead char then. My first trip to UC, I couldnt figure out how to get inside, I thought that the doors kept closing on me when I got close because I didnt have Friendly rep. It seemed every time I got close to a door, it would close on me. Little did I realize it was just the elevator closing the door on me and it was only coincidence on the timing making it seem like it was closing on me. I realized this after I grinded my way to friendly with quests in Trisfal Glades =/

Before Ity, I started a mage. When I hit lvl 20-25, I was taking my new spells..but there was one spell in red but I had the good lvl to take it. It was Pyroblast RANK 2 and I didnt have the RANK 1. I open a ticket and the guy said that he cannot help me with this because it was easy to get. I search for like 1 day how to get the rank 1. I asked Carysa (that was lvl 40 and have the Pyroblast) and we thought that was a bug. Finally I didnt love my mage so I started Ity. I delete my mage and I only know that Pyroblast was a Talent in the Fire one when Ity was lvl 40-50. xD   :-[ ]:D

LOL at Blue's comment first of all! I pictured it and literally laughed out loud  :D

Saw a William Shatner commercial = DL the trial version = got to level 20 in 3 days=
-didn't know why I couldn't go higher than 20.
-didn't know why I couldn't trade with people
-didn't know what all these talent points were (had all 10 split among the 3 trees)
-was randomly invited into a guild called "elevenfortyfive" at level 2.. and was somehow promoted to GM by level 7 lol. Had no clue what this 'guild' was, just that I had another name on top of mine.
-didn't know how to get rid of this name.. eventually found out how to put up a ticket, and asked to have this "name" removed from above me. Never heard back from them lol
-thought if i was a bear, the other bears in the wood areas wouldn't attack me ... was not the case  ::)

Got a whole lot more..but those first 20 levels were sure as hell interesting to say the least!

When i first got Aspect of the Cheetah, I thought it was made to fight and i was very upset at getting dazed and was wondering why i was permanently dazed while fighting.  I didn't want to get rid of that aspect and I did that until lvl 30 or 40 where i notice it was only a travelling aspect and had a hunter friend show me how to use it (he didnt know i was doing that hahah)

My first horde toon was a BE mage, was in Org with cy, he was in the bank or something, so I was outside buffing everyone that had mana with Arcane Intellect.... and couldn't figure out why everytime I did that their mana would decrease.... obviously didn't read the spell, so I asked Cy, (who by that time already had Riddlerr to around 53 or so... ) he proceeded to laugh at me and explain that it gives u more intellect, therefore increasing your mana pool, making it look like they were losing mana...

Up until that point I was under the impression it was similar to Blessing of Wisdom and that it would regen mana   :-[

Had my hearthstone right beside my food and drink icons, which i made really small in dominos btw, and accidentally clicked it inside of a dungeon instead of the other icons. Had to get a summons back. Next day, went to drink, clicked my hearthstone again, coudln't figure out why my mana wasn't going up, didn't notice the hearth bar. Did it again. I have seperated my hearth from everything lol. And this was not too long ago.

I have one of my own, and one from an old guildee:

Mine: After a recent patch - the one that redid pally judgments and such, I was completely convinced that they took away our own pally bubble (becuase it dissapeared from my key mapping) and went about two weeks without it before Nix told me to just look inside the skill book - and there it was waiting for me =)

Someone elses: An old hunter guildee once asked me in whisper if the LAYOUT of a heroic dungeon CHANGED from the normal mode layout becuase she got lost after a wipe lol

Zylax is my first love.  But leveling him and all that i Had no clue what gear i was to use.  Not until I met Bourne did i get alot better at my toon.  So leveling I would have blues and greens with +spirit, and +int.  Building a unstoppable roguedrood!

LOL great thread!!:)
I've had a lot of noob moments, here are some that are on top of my head:

When Tol was around lvl 10 or so I was walking in Darnassus, saw the reagent vendor and having played wc3, I thought everyone could use ankh, symbol of kings, etc...and wasted all my money:(
I leveled as balance for most parts and I remember meleeing mobs in night elf form a lot lol!
I still have no idea wth the spell soothe animal is or does....(and no i'm not gonna read it)
One of my first times doing Kara, I asked where do I get this book quest item, Arc told me it's in that room(in the hall before mores) as soon as I saw chat I head in the room without noticing all the ppl saying no and don't go now, there are still mobs.... and wiped the raid:(
There has been a lot of time while i was tanking when I had the wrong gear on...recently i have been accidently hitting a wrong button on my cast bar and changing to NE form in the middle of tanking a boss(thank you great healers for keeping me up!!)
Will post more as I remember:)

This happened last night....

Invites go out to all Naxx signups, we get summoned, stage, and get ready to rock Naxx....the last time, we went in and beat all mobs up to Loatheb, who is the last boss of the plague quarter....the first people in are like "WTF - all the trash respawned in the plague quarter", which sucks, but we figured that was just the way it was and we were set to reclear..at the very first trash mob pull we are struggling to down the mobs, THEN a gargoyle pat comes...

I mark the gargoyle with an "x" - the way those work is that at 20-30% health they do a slow channeled spell, and if you dont kill them they regain like 50% health and you have to do it all over again...after the gargoyle regained his health a few times we start dying and run out....

at that moment I start lambasting the raid - for not hitting "X", for not dropping the gargoyle before the channeled spell was done...I even told everyone that if we couldnt even drop one trash mob we should all go run 5 man's to learn to play...

...at that time people notice that the instance was set to heroic.....meaning it was tuned for 25 players, NOT 10....

whoops...hehehehe

my first toon was a troll rogue, which i chose based off warcraft 2, cause rogues started with throwing weapons... when i got a [item]Strong Fishing Pole[/item] i used it for 2 levels cause the damage was better.... when i got to crossroads i vendored all my armor to get a pair of white dagger, from a vendor, cause they were so much better than what i had...

I remember as a young priest I was always afraid to give people fortitude. If I did happen to give it to someone, all I saw was them 'lose' health as their total hp's were increased but their current health was not. I was horrified that I was killing these players with something I thought should be helping them!

It wasn't till I was in my mid-20s that I learned to read, and finally figured out what was going on.

LOL...the very first time I went into Kara, I was asked to follow someone, and do an MD pull...ran around in circles for a bit, turning redder by the minute, hoping someone would pleeeeassee tell me what the heck an MD pull was (I was still very new to the guild at the time)...finally, someone whispered me, "Uhhhh...you DO know what MD stands for don't you?" I'd had MD for I don't know how long, but didn't know I had it, had never used it, and never even heard of it...if you could have seen me, my face was redder than it's probably ever been...  ::)

Sounds like Doc in real life  :P

Seriously though, this thread is $$$

This not being my first MMO, my newbness didn't show up until slightly later on. The most noob thing I've ever done, however, was involved with the auctioneer addon:

The "Price by unit" feature seemed awesome, I was using it to sort through ore, shards, you name it. Anyways, I forgot about it 15 minutes later and saw that most Greater Planar essences were listed at almost nothing compared to the normal price... so I bought out the ENTIRE market, probably 1000-1500g worth and re-upped the price to whatever the norm was at the time. Then, they sold like hotcakes. I repeated this process several times, and for some reason the fact that my gold supply was dwindling somehow escaped me. Several hours into this I finally realized what had happened, and that I had lost about 2,000g... lol

First of all id like to start by saying im very cheap, and wow was the first mmo id ever played. So my first character was a night elf hunter and in the mid 20s i decided i wanted to do this deadmines thing i had been hearing about in general chat. So i stood by the summoning stone yelling "invite me to deadmines!" . i got a group and about 8 minutes into the run they noticed i didnt have a pet. I was bombarded by insults about not having a pet and kicked from the group.(haha i didnt have a pet because i didnt want to pay for the food) So after taking all this crap for not having a pet i decided i needed one. I went to the little graveyard outside deadmines and tamed one of those birds, then got another group for deadmines.this time they noticed i was rolling need on leather armor worse than my own(I did this becuase i knew nothing about stats and thought the item with the highest armor was the best) and i was kicked once again.

Knowing nothing about the way WoW handled stats, I leveled Bombur with the idea that, since I used Mana, and Int gave me Mana I needed every little bit I could find. And, Since the Dwarf Pally starter weapon was a hammer, I figured that this was the only weapon type I could use. It wasn't til Trismus saw me leveling a mutant hybrid spec, stacking int, with a two handed hammer from level 20 (this is at ~40, mind you) That I learned better. He looked over my shoulder and started laughing.

I have the noobiest of the noob stories for you.  I think I start with +5 noob because my main IS STILL a NE Hunter.

Noob story #1:  My first character ever was actually an Orc Warrior.  I had no idea what I was doing.  I wandered far outside of the starting zone and died so many times that my gear turned red and I had no money to fix it.  I couldn't fight because I had no gear.  So I decided to reroll as a NE Hunter.

Noob story #2:  I had never played an MMO before, but I had played a LOT of other RPGs with the classic mechanic of searching everywhere for hidden items: i.e., Pokemon, Zelda, FF etc.  This being said, it took me about a week to lvl from 1 to 10.  I clicked on everything!  In my great search for hidden items that I never found, I came across the waterfall that flows out of the west side of Darnassus and subsequently falls a LONG way down to the sea below.  I figured, this is cool, I wonder what's down there.  I could just jump and then do a corpse run and rez down there.  I had been stuck in Darnassus for a few hours because I had no idea the glowing pink hut teleported you to Ruth'theran village.  I jumped off of the waterfall and died on a limb of the tree about half way down.  Oh well, not a big deal, I'll just jump in the same place and rez on the branch.  I missed the branch and fell all the way to the water below thus I was unable to get close enough to rez.  So I proceeded to swim in ghost form CLOCKWISE around Teldrassil.  As I went around the island, I swam into each of the bays because I didn't know if I'd find anything, such as a spirit healer, to save the day.  I wish I knew how long it took me to swim around the island.  But by the time I rounded the east side of the island, I was swearing that this was the stupidest game even and I just wasted $40.  And it's not like I would restart a new character once I got stuck.  Only a total noob would do something like that.  :P

Two days ago:

Tanking reg UK on my DK (har) in a random pug group - couldn't for the life of me figure out why I couldn't hold aggro off a hunter who was doing only 100 dps more than I was. To add insult to injury, these weren't even the off-tank mobs - they were the ones I had marked and was currently hacking away at. Frustrated, I logged and took a nap since I'd only had three hours of sleep the night before.

Woke up later on and logged onto my DK to discover something kind of important - I'd been tanking the entire instance in blood presence.

/facepalm.

I done so many noob things on my mage and i know others have done them also, was in a kara pug one night and we did a clear and group asked for a port me already sleepy from the lack of, teleported myself instead of opening a portal, and they got pissed and kicked me. and then when i was a lowbie bout 20ish i had a group ask me to sheep the target and i told em i didnt do that cause it gives the target health back so i didnt and then they explain and i was like ahh, so later on we was fighting a mob in sfk and got the mob to like 20% and then i sheeped him cause i though at this point they couldnt hurt us and it healed him all the way really fast and then had a group ask me for food and i didnt know i could even make it til like lv 58.

Ok so i have had my share of Noobish moments, but where do i begin...I guess I can start with this one...I was on my warrior and doing a quest from SW to EPL, where you have to kill the "traitor"...there was a BE Pally and a BE Mage standing next to the guy i was supposed to kill...the quest told me "raid" quest, but i didnt think anything of it...i walk up and attack the guy i was supposed to...not only does he summon adds, but he was flagged for being a Horde NPC, so i flag, and get dropped in about 2.5 seconds, the whole while getting laughed at by the Blood elves lol

Ok, so being an old beta player  8), mine's from way way back when...

My first day I'm in the beta, I roll up a NE druid cause I mean seriously, what's cooler than being a bear or a cat, right? Well, I'm wandering around Teldrassil, hunting those weak green spiders over by Starbreeze Village, and I didn't realize you could slip down the branches that hang out there if you aren't careful... Well, I wasn't.

I spent about 20 mins trying to figure out how to hop down the tree to get to where my corpse landed... What's a spirit healer?

Oh, and more recently... we're in OS 25, I'm noticing I'm having a hell of a time not pulling aggro from Arc.. I'm taking a ton of dmg, and not quite sure what's going on.. Then I get this tell from Arc.. um, are you in frost presence?... Sure 'nuff.  :'(

It's been a while since I pugged a group. Today I was on my hunter and decided to try BRD. The group sat at the stone a dueld for 30 minutes before we started. I can tolerate some stuff, but this really took the cake for me. The tank would go afk, then res the druid healer that was tanking in his place. After 3 or so deaths, he came back, and the following took place. Wookyman is the tank.

-At one point, I took a rogue's advice on DPS and gemmed for hit.  Not good
-Learned that about 2 weeks ago you can click on the ready check button in the raid window
-I actually thought spamming piercing howl in defensive stat would of kept me on top of threat =/
It's kind of funny how much you learn along the way, maybe that's why I tend to be very nice to newer/less experienced players.

Here's a remembered one from my days leveling Fireheart:

I was 40-something and running Sunken Temple with a decent group of players. Up until this point I had never had need to use my soulstone, so when the healer asked for it, I was excited. "Don't worry," I said, "I've got the stone all set." Mind you, the stone was still in my bags. If the healer were to die, I thought the stone would be used like one would use the Gnomish Jumper Cables - apply to the person while they are dead, and POOF! One living person, coming up. Needless to say, the healer eventually did die, and I targetted the player, all excited (I get that way when using a new ability, it has nothing to do with the fact that they were dead, I swear), clicked the stone, and then... "Invalid target".

Boy was I embarrassed. Popped the stone on the healer after they ran back and didn't say another word the entire run.

I can't believe Tony hasn't posted this one yet...  I laughed all night after this happened...  best laugh ever.

Tony would always have a character that out ranked me.  He would always want to duel me as well.  So I would appease him and duel him...  him winning every time.  Resulting in me bowing down to him.

We had started characters on another realm...  horde I believe (not too sure anymore) but my character was superior to his character by a little bit.  We were in a village with a bonfire in the middle of it.  Standing next to the bonfire, I challenged him to a duel and he accepted.  Finally I defeated him.  After bowing down to me, Tony backed his character into the fire and BAM!  Immediately dead.  "WTF happened?!"   LOL!!!   It all happened so fast...  Best victory ever!!!

I can't tell you how many times I died out front of orgrimmar on my orc warrior.  I'd lose a duel and then get one-shot by some level 6 durotar pig that aggro'd on me when I demo shouted or something equally stupid lol.

My newb stories:  First character I ever rolled was a dwarf pally.  I played diablo 2 prior to this, where you have to manually click for each attack.  you wear out mice playing that game.  So naturally I start spam right clicking on my targets and turning autoattack on and off.  As a pally that's your only damaging move to start out with, so I kept dying to level 2-3 troggs.  I decided that paladins suck, and rerolled a warrior.  Back in the early days warriors had some retarded miss chance, like 25% miss with a two hander.  I made it to level 8.  "Warriors suck!".  Rerolled druid.  Specced balance because it's the first talent tree tab.  Didn't see the other ones.  My attack rotation was:  Starfire, Moonfire, melee with staff.  Only instead of a staff I used Gubber Blump's fishing pole because it had the highest dps I could find.  I would cast healing touch at 50% because the spell pushback meant I would get it off just in time.  It took me three months to hit level 30.

Savage -> WoW was not a good transition.  Auto attack sucked... I'm glad Panz discovered how it worked and was able to set me straight.

Heh, I did the same thing going from Diablo 2 and NWN to WoW - when I started playing I had the same bad habits Panz and un4 had and clicked constantly at the little auto-attack icon until my boyfriend asked me what I was doing and put a stop to it. >.<

Okay, WoW was my very first MMO and my first computer game period! I'd played things like Harvest Moon and Zelda but nothing else.  It took me (with a couple breaks thrown in) two years to level my mage to 80, hitting 70 just before Wrath of the Lich King came out.

1. I had no idea what was with all the armor and i assumed (since i always seemed to die so easily) that more armor would help me.  I even made a habit of putting armor enchants (which someone had one day randomly given me) on my cloaks.  Thankfully Madden set me straight eventually.

2. If you've ever leveled a mage you realize that there is a point, as in lvl 69 before you get a new rank of conjure refreshment, where the food just doesn't fill you up as fast.  And as squishy as i was, getting fully health and mana was really important because soon there would be a new mob wanting to kill me. By the time i realized i could conjure food and water it was at that point and i was so frustrated with the slow rate, i refused to use it and only drank vendor food and water for the longest time.  I blew a lot of the money i made on buying food and water (and that was until Madden again set me straight).

3.  I didn't actually realize i had talent points for a long while, me being especially unobservant.  I ended up around level fifteen or sixteen before someone pointed it out to me.  And then i didn't even understand what i was doing, putting points in.  I ended up levelin with a rather specially spec that amazed Madden. ("how in the heck have you managed to make it to sixty??")  I leveled as frost and it was so slow back then, so much worse than it is now.

I could keep going but it only gets worse because i'm still kind of a noob at this  :-X.

Took a hard lesson today. Didn't really happen in game but still hindered me from playing. Re-formatted my PC to see if maybe I could stop some of the lock up troubles I was having. Well pc is working great, so I went to download the WoW installer. Didn't pay attention just clicked a google link to a battle.net site for the installer and proceeded to let it download half the day. Got it installed, went to play and got a message saying I couldn't log in. Come to find out I downloaded the EU installer and now I get to do it all over again. I guess I am a Huntard even out of WoW lol. Needless to say from now on I will L2Read what I'm downloading and actually log into my account before hand, just in case!
