Yes and alot of the workers that mine them live in horrible conditions and some are even slaves. Also the leaders of the diamond market are mostly cruel warlords and they sell these diamonds to fund there wars in africa.

The reason diamonds are so expensive is they set the standards of cut, value and surplus. Its a "controlled" substance in that they limit the quality and production to keep prices at a set level.
