Title: How you say your name.
Post by: usonian on February 12, 2007, 09:32:32 AM
So sometimes my friends who have not yet been sucked in by WoW (at least not directly) will watch me play.  While I describe the in's and out's of the game I'll often use guildies' names and find it interesting to try actually saying them since I don't have to worry about pronunciation when I'm typing.  What got me started on this was when my friend started pronouncing Uso as "ooo-so" when in my head it should be "you-so" since it is short for Usonian "you-so-nee-an".

Maybe I'm going crazy, but I think it would be fun to see how everyone pronounces their names (if they aren't obvious, or even if they are) and see if what we hear in our heads matches what the creater intended.  So let's get this started:

Usonian - "you-so-nee-an"
Uso - "you-so"

Drygioni is a Welsh word for "wickedness" or "badness"

pronounced:  Drigg-Yo-nee

great thread Uso

well uso...i can actually see why there would be confusion...pronounce "utilititarian"...that word requires you to make a "you" to start...now pronounce "ubiqitous"...that word uses the "ooo" start...english is probably the most inconsistent language on the planet for pronuniation and grammar...

arcdelad - arc (like the geometric shape)-duh-lad (like my kid)

i think its interesting too to seewhere these names came from...dry's is certainly interesting....how many people could guess where yours came from uso???? :)

This is great.  I always pronounced Drygioni as "dry-gee-oh-nee". LOL

same...

...and btw...even if your aussie, british, or canadian, you all have an american accent in my mental readings :P

Post by: Threlin on February 12, 2007, 09:49:12 AM
Threlin is dwarvish for "redneck land surveyor."  ;D

Pronounced just as it's written, with a "th" as in the, a short e, the emphasis on the L and in as in...well...in. ;)

Threl-in

I tend to go with names that have no underlying meaning, but at least have an in-game feel.

Great thread, Uso! (and great name, Drygioni!)

Ayrn = Arin or Erin (Aryn was taken already so I had to deviate slightly)

Nahimana = Naa-hee-maa-naa (Cherokee name deviation for "Moonlight")
Adahy = Aa-daa-hee (Nahi's pet wolf / Cherokee for "Lives in the woods" bestowed on a male)

Astrania - Astra-nee-aa (said similar to "Astronomy" if you replaced the first "o" with an "a") (created from her being a Draenei and coming from a spaceship / stars / where Tom Cruise is from)

Shadowwolf - should be pronounced just like the two words were seperate (blizz doesnt allow spaces), not mashed together, lol. (very long story as to where this came from but it has been my name since I was a baby)

For me I like this game cause everyone is always like how the heck do you say your name  ;D. Kaethdorala - Like kayth-dora-la I dont think its that hard to say. I got it from taking Kael like Kael'thas and just adding my own spin to it. I was really into lore and stuff and thought it sounded night elvishy lol i just made up a word elvishy  :P.

I don't think my name is very hard to figure out but essentially Kreig is pronounced kreeg... as to the spelling, well, originally when i created the name in EQ2 it was Krieg.  However, someone beat me to it so Kreig it is.  In chat, either is fine since i don't think there will ever be a confusion for who it is.

Post by: dharq on February 12, 2007, 11:38:36 AM
I don't know.. mine are kinda difficult...  ???

Dharq, Darq, Ðharq, Ðarq... all pronounced like "dark".
Dalak - Dal (like the name "Al" with a D in front) ack (like pack, back, sack, quack, etc.)
Mithrax - Myth racks
Rhyn - Rin
Ezfreezy - EE zee free zee

That about covers it. At least until I get my shaman to 70 and unleash my strangely named priest alt on the world.

As far as meanings for my names, some people say I put way too much thought into them but I figure if I'm going to be using them for days/weeks/years then the name might as well have some significance.

Usonian - stems from my obsesssion with architecture but has no real character meaning.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usonian
Leonov "lee-oh-nov"- named after the first person to walk in space, the russian Alexei Leonov (fitting for Draenei I think)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexei_Leonov
Wetiko "wet-ee-ko"- "mythical native american creature... seen at night... eight feet tall... glowing red eyes" works for a horde tauren who actually has red eyes.  When you see him, you'll see them, followed by a lightning bolt :)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wetiko
Cutchu - becuase he will, indeed, cut you. ]:D

Well, it might cost me significant spousal DKP to tell the origin of Vocto....

Anyway, Vocto didnt sound very appropriate, so I added the suffix and became Voctovian.

To pronounce... Voc (rhymes with doc, rock) is a fine concatenation, the full name I pronounce voc-toe-vee-an

Wrathency started as a random name, I liked the wrath part.  It looked cool but the original name was used.. I tweaked it and became wrathency.

Voc

Aldel is too lazy to make his own post so we're combining it in one post  ;D

Lullah: Loooo-Lah.  I liked the name Tallulah but I found out a nickname for it is Lullah and I thought it looked better as well.

Lovica:  Luhv-vee-kah and it means lovable & lovely girl.  Really nice name, just a pity I don't play my 'lock anymore :(

Syrenzu:  Sy-ren-zu.  Japanese romanization of the word Silencer.  I don't know why I named my hunter "Silencer" but the romanized version sounded nice, especially the Syren part heh.

Raerin:  Ray-rin.  I just made this one up and thought it sounded cute.  Again asian (chinese/japanese) influence in the name too.

----

Aldel: A-del (L is silent for unknown reasons...)  This was one of his bank characters on FFXI.  He got the name from pressing the randomizing name option and Adel came up, so he decided to be witty and put an L behind the A :P

Aldey:  Al-dee.  Yea..he got unoriginal.

My name is easy Jan - dris (as in is).
A random name select & the first one that came up that I could actually pronounce  ;D
I put very little thought into this name as I started wow on a dare from my son & who cares what I was called as I would be deleting the character in a week at most. Oh well - live & learn.

Miriel  - Mir/ee/elle  Yes, I am a geek...sigh...Miriel was the name of my favorite Dungeons and Dragons character, lol.  Miriel was also the name of my Inquisitor in EQ2, where I met this other geek named Krieg.  :snowman_smiley:

Morwen was the name of a much beloved cat I had had for 15 years.   :'(

Kothnok: just as it sounds.
I'm in the same boat as Jandris with him as I was creating characters on several servers, playing a few hours and making another.  Alex was up a whole 5 minutes when I logged in, made a character and played a bit.  Never expected he'd go the distance. :)

Navar: Na-var
one of the characters from Lady Hawk.  Cool guy.

Thogryn: Tho-grin
I used a "y" because the "i" version was already taken.  Back in my role playing days, whenever I had a dwarven character around, he was named this.  No references, just sounds dwarven.

Marnok: Mar-nok
I wanted a nod to Kothnok and yet sounded like a powerful wizard.

*laughs* I guess I don't pick names that are hard to pronounce.

Post by: Luise on February 14, 2007, 03:00:09 AM
Well I am in the same boat as Jandris- thought I'd just check out the game the kids were playing. And as I have such a bad memory I thought I'd just give the character my real first name- Louise.  That was taken- so I went for the Dutch version- Luise - pronounced "Loosh" (with a Dutch accent) in rl- It means "brave warrior"- so it sort of suits my character anyway.

Well you all are so clever - this is a great thread. I knew about Shadow's names which I love, and Lyte and Darq's were straight forward, but some of the others- well it's been great.

And Koth- I loved that movie Lady Hawk.

And Uso- I've been saying your name incorrectly.

Got yours right Muri- must be the Aussie connection :)

And TB- there's more to your name isn't there?  ;) P.S. I love your alt name: "Checkmate" - perfect rogue name.

There is more to Thingiebob, but it is of an adult nature I can't explain here.

Darkling came from this cheesy horror movie where this guy had to kill a demon baby named 'The Darkling.' Actually, I think that was the name of the movie too. I don't know cause I caught it on Sci-Fi around 2 a.m.

Chekmate, well, think chess and strategy.

Hiyas, should be self explanatory on that one.

Should be creating a new alt soon. Dranei shadow priest is what I am going to looking at. 'Slapindaface' is the name I'm thinking of for her.

Ima kinda confused Ima, about how you pronounce your names. For example is it "Ima" as in "Ima in the Dharq about this". Or perhaps the "i" is pronounced "ee" as in
"eee  Ma not asparagus for dinner again".  Or maybe it's a silent "i" as in "Ma, I'm a not cleaning my room".

Then there's Christine. Is that the Christine from Stephen King's movie, or maybe it's pronounced "Chris tyne"  as in the word tine which means fork and Ima shuddering to think what you did with to Chris with a fork. Shades of Hannibal Lector.

And finally Lyte - Ima thinking maybe it's "lite" as in "lite beer" or the "e" is silent as it could be "Lit" as I lit up Dharq's life.

Ima, Ima wondering if you could shed some Lyte on this as Ima finding it exasperating.

amberyle = am ber l  ;D

I used to read alot of fantasy style books and amberyle was a character in 2 differ series. In dragonlance she was Raistlin's rumored daughter. In a Terry Brooks elfstone series she was a elf priestess.

Moonrose = Moon Rose lol pretty easy   :D

I could not think of any of my usual names and she was so bluish white skinned i thought of the moon and rose idk lol

keryna = ker e na  :P

A bank char now so not exciting but that was my name on a differ mmorpg.

Kaelia = kay lee a  :-*

This name came from a game random supposed to be for a blood elf but i liked it.^^

Post by: Zario on February 27, 2007, 09:07:36 AM
I've definitely been saying all of your names wrong  ;D

Zario >> think Mario with a Z.  I actually was flipping through the random names and watching Cheat! on G4 when they were talking about the Linkin quest with the two characters that looked like Mario and Luigi.  A name popped up that started with a Z and it looked similar to Zario, so I went with it.  I never thought I'd actually keep the character as my main.

Denorc >> Den-Orc, pretty easy.  random name that I thought was funny, considering it was a dwarf priest.

Moonfanne  >>  I was clicking through random names.  I originally made it for my wife to try and I was teasing her because she has some junk in the trunk, so I kept the name and pronounced it moon-fanny

Zyr >> Z-er,  I like the letter z  :)

Pad-ah-mar (Padimar)

A name that was first used in my first MMORPG adventure - Dark Ages of Camelot.  It came from a Terry Brooks novel, The Sword of Shannara when I mispelled the rogue like character's name.  The original name was supposed to be "Panamon" but I forgot how to spell it and used the word here thinking it was correct.  I wound up liking it and kept it ever since.

Die-gore-"o"  (Daigoro)

Apparently, the literal japanese translation for this name means "Great Fifth Son."  This was a name I grabbed off the screen as my younger brother was watching Rurouni Kenshin on the TV as I was creating him.

Ma-ha-dough (Mahado)

Again, inspired by TV - this came off a Yu-Gi-Oh episode my brother was watching.  For those of you ever seen the show, he's known as "The Dark Magician."

Other names you've seen before came from various David Eddings books.

Screenlooker - Screen - Look - er

Grimbob   Grim - Bob

Sheeng - She - ng

Figured I'd bump this topic since it's been a while and there are some newer members to the Twilight family =)

Fiere - Fee-ear-ee (there's an extra emphasis of the i on the second syllable - sounds slightly more exotic than "fiery" which is one of the more common mispronounciations I get)

Came up with this one fooling around with random name gen on Neverwinter Nights way back when. She was a Ranger/Thief and since I took her pretty much to the end of the game before my laptop crashed and burned, it's become my nick for the druids (or similar such characters) I create. At this point it's also evolved into a general purpose nick - aim, irc, shacknews, etc.
