If you name your kid Shadow, be sure to give them a middle name they can sub in from time to time =)

Im glad my mother had the foresight to do that because you have no idea how hard it is to explain to someone my name really is "Shadow" and no im not a porno star or a stripper  >:(

I love my name, but general society doesnt seem to think its befitting for a professional businesswoman, so I often have to go by my middle name  :-\

My family practices naming kids with exotic names for some strange reason, im not really sure why. Im told my ancestors named children based on what they felt their child embodied most, be it a feeling, a part of nature, etc.

Theres a site that I think might help: http://www.babynameguide.com/

omg thats awsome didnt know "shadow" was your real name.... thats a cool name i just love it... i named my oldest gabriella because of gabriel meaning god is my strength (and toher reasons that are to long to explain) and alannah (my youngest) which means peaceful and Feminine form of Alan which means handsome or beautiful in her case(which see never acts that way but has something about her that when you look at her you feel peaceful werid huh) which hubby spelled her name wrong in the hosptial so people always call her name out like it was the city in ga instead of A-lon-na..

Huge grats on the new addition, Kajunlady!

I always viewed baby names as a tough one.  What name shall I stick my kid with for the rest of their life?  Something that will get mispelled and mispronounced, no doubt.  Also, it has to be something that their friends will shorten into a nickname that you absolutely will hate.

The best advice I ever heard was the following:

1.  Creat your short list of name candidates
2.  Open your front door and step outside
3.  Scream each name as loud as you can...something like "Hey Mary - I told you to get inside and start your homework - now do it!!!"
4.  Evaluate which name sounded the best and there's your winner.

By the way, I've been meaning to ask the origin of your name.  I grew up in Louisiana, so was naturally curious.

Congrats on the baby, kajun!

I'm still a few years from ever thinking about one of my own, but my family's taken to naming their children based off of anything that takes their fancy, which I'll probably continue just because I am ever my mother's daughter >.<

My first name, Gillian, is the name of a minor character in Leon Uris' Trinity - Mom just liked the name (and mispronounced it too - he would've used the traditional irish JILL-ian pronounciation) And my sister's middle name Rathlyn is a misspelling of a small island off the coast of Ireland: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rathlin_Island =P Go figure.

Congrats, Kajunlady!

One thing to consider on names is the resulting initials and any words they may make. Someone named Aardvark Snarky Smith might not like to monogram his clothing with A.S.S. if ya get my drift.  And Frankie Avocado Trumpet is going to get called FAT all his life.  ;)

When my kids were born we did not find out what the gender would be beforehand. My ex and I had a deal that if it was a boy, I got to choose the first name and she the middle and if a girl the opposite would hold true. My first was a girl and her middle name ended up being Kevyn. She loves it, btw.

When my son was born a couple years later, I chose Gavin as his first name. It means "white falcon" in Welsh and/or Scottish. It's amazing how it suits him.

I agree with all that's been said above about choosing...especially Lyn's!

Congrats again!!!

Congratulations! I hope everything goes well for you and the baby!

In addition to what GB said about initials, you can do some really neat things with them... My first name is Meghan and my initials are M.E.G.  so people always think I'm writing my nickname instead of initials.  I'm a lot better off than the Andrew Steven Smith who was in one of my high school classes.

Also, be careful with the first and last name combination- I also knew a girl named Paige Turner...

Hey, congrats!  How about "Dvalin?"  ]:D

I'm not expecting to ever be ready for children, but I do love more exotic names like Isabella and Avey for girls.  For guys, I'd have to go with the classic Francis Xavier, but I'm Italian :P

just because i work at an inbound call center i get to see peoples names all day long - and they do preface what you think about the person!

personally, while its fun to talk to harold potter, candy, star, and ringo; sticky jones, and david u martinez (oh, and he was), i would never want a name that memorable.

some of the ones i have liked:  Manuel, Garner, Simone (thats seh-moan, not sigh-mon), Ashlin, Gauge, Kaylin, Evan, Hunter, Cornellia, Lee, Aislin, Brittania, Laurel

NJOY AND CONGRATS!

I 2nd the francis xavier if he's a little boy.  Being able to call yourself F.X. yourlastname would be great.

but it doesn't really matter, $10 gets you a name change amirite?

Just out of curiosity, I looked this up. Actually in TN it'll cost you $134 just to file the petition with the court. Many online suppliers of legal packages charge $40 for a name change kit. Add in any other costs you might incur whether from court fees or missed work for attending a hearing, etc and you're probably looking at a total cost of around $200 give or take.

Now that ain't gonna break the bank...but you wouldn't want to change your name every other Wednesday, either. ;)

Alan means handsome and elegant? My sons middle name is Alan :)

We named our first son Edward, which is very traditional, then we named our second son Ethan, which is also traditional, but also "trendy" i guess...

I have a nephew by the name of Ethan Allen (spelled a little different than your son's name), which also is a furniture store name...haha   :snowman_smiley:

My sister didn't know about the store name until after she had already registered his name  :P

LOL...we thought about ethan alan the first time we got pregnant, but opted not to due to the furniture store hehehe

ethan is actually an old name....edith wharton wrote "Ethan Frome" in the early 1900's and kind of let it resurface into the public eye...

Yeah- my initials are LAG  :-\
and Eravion's are  MAA

Another thing to watch for is trends amongst celebrities.

My eldest is Lisa-Marie
and then 21 months later we had Michael.
So people just assumed I was an Elvis fan- although we didn't even think about that at the time : we just liked the names and their Hebrew meanings. At least now it has all died out as I hoped and no-one associates the kids with Lisa-Marie Presley and Michael Jackson.

The other thing to consider is spelling a name slightly different to the norm...this is a true story: After we had our third child- a boy, we named him John. When I told the nurse his name, she replied "That's an unusual name...how do you spell it? " I laughed, but she was serious!

Finally- I just want to wish you all the best through birth and pregnancy - I wish they could invent a [feel no birth pain potion] - I'd send it to you :) And no matter what the name, your little one will grow up to be a happy, healthy, all round good guy. ;)

we have decided on a BOYS name... Raily Scott (irish name)  now since raily is a name we both love and go for either sex now all we need is a middle name for a girl... besides nicole (youngest has that taken already. and were staying away from A names.. so we dont have a child as R.A.K ..

or to end up like S.A.K (hubbys)
                       K.A.K (mine)
                       G.A.K (gabbys)
and the one that broke it A.N.K
