Vikings invaded england continuously for roughly a thousand years, before settling down and making the land their own. Vikings invaded France to the point where Charles the Bald gave them the state of Normandy to act as a buffer to future viking invasions. The normans proceeded to invade england again. Vikings settled russia. Vikings founded a truely global system of trade. Vikings perfected the art of navigation by the sun and stars, made detailed maps, invented boats suitable for an atlantic crossing, settled Iceland and Greenland, and landed on North America 800 years before Columbus was even born. Vikings had a rich mythology and oral history, a unique rune based system of writing, democratic laws (the Althing of iceland was the first democratic government since rome, and the last until the Enlightenment), and talented poets.
Pirates basically got drunk and attacked merchant ships. pffft.
