Title: in the words of Ahnold....
Post by: Arcdelad on June 04, 2008, 08:06:52 AM
...in by far the BEST effort of cinematic brilliance of ALL TIME ("Batman and Robin"....duh!) - "Freeze!"

And that is exactly what I am doing right now in my office (see pic below).

Here is my dilemna - we work in a green building, which means we have some of the cooler (pun not intended) construction facets of modern environmentally sound contstruction - we have geothermal heat, porous pavement on the exterior, we harvest light through low walls (most people dont even use their lights), and wind is harvested for cooling to reduce the HVAC load.

Under my desk, I also have a combo heater / cooler unit, where the T-stat is actully in my office, so I have complete control over the temperature...

...IN THEORY.

Becauase pennsylvania is so close to the ocean, it is muggy, meaning on a good, warm day I have a perma-coat of slimy sweat adhering to my body that refuses to evaporate (Right guard do your stuff!)...I also have a great window view in my office - this is great for the scoping out the occasional hot chick that comes to the office (giving me a reason to meander to the front lobby), but it also means I have a lot of heat coming in the window in terms of solar heat transfer...

So...with my T-stat armed, I turn on the cooling to a reasonable 72 degrees.....only to get HIT with a gale force frigid air eminating from under the counter, which conveniently hits my legs and.....other....important parts - which are now cryogenically frozen and will subsequently prevent me from producing any more offspring (anyone have a chisel so i can go to the bathroom?)

Do I sweat? Do I freeze? Do I let sweat build up and then freeze it?!? I think Ill just get naked at work and deal with the heat...

buy a small plug in fan that you can pitch up or down.  put it under your desk, blowing upwards.

oh and cry more, I work in a box full of running machines, with furnaces for heat treat at one end.

Hmm, high humidity, warm air layer up top, cooler air below.... you should develop a nice cloud pattern by late afternoon.  :)

Like Panz said, you need to go for air movement. How about a ceiling fan?  ;)

Or even a tabletop fan! Or you could set the thermostat to 78 or something.

By the way, NASA is so cold that I'd be comfortable walking around in my lab coat all day since they keep the thermostat there at like 65. Those are your tax dollars hard at work ;)

Working the weekends in a building where all of the other people are Monday-Friday 9-5 is fun. They turn off the air. So I go for walks into the Datacenter when I get too hot.

Its also great for when you come back from lunch where u left the building in the summer. Its 95 and humid out so you come back and the regular AC just isn't enough, so you duck into the Datacenter and stand in front of the chillers for a little.

There, all better.

I'm in panz's boat - l2fan XD You don't know what sweating is until you've worked in a warehouse that is already without A/C, but at the same time has anywhere from 50 to several hundred lighting fixtures that run at temperatures exceeding 200 degrees F each all running at once. All day too, because we had to stress test the things and make sure they'd last through weeks-long events. Mmmm, baby.

I have crap all over the place...I am going to clean it today I think...

And come on guys...its WAY harder to be in an office environment then some sweaty shop or something like panz...I mean...there is so much free food all the time, plus the abundance of coffee, the fridge full of cokes and thanks to my suggestion now RED BULLS (mwahahahahahaha), the comfy reclining chair - its hard to be an office guy! sheesh!

Yea let me tell you, it was rough moving from the 23rd floor of the Universal Building overlooking the Hollywood Hills to working in my house. I dont know how I ever coped with such a hostile work environment of lovely views, an abundance of free beverages and snacks and an office that was bigger than my first apartment.

we ran out of hand soap today in the shop, so we washed our hands with comet.  Eventually one of the office workers brought out a gallon jug of the kind of hand soap the office guys use (we workers have a lovely concoction that's made of powdered walnut shells, a degreaser, and lotion, seriously it's the best stuff ever for getting grime off) but it was cut halfway with water.

you office pukes have NOTHING on me, baby!

On a follow up - today I used some of the finest office materials i could find (cardboard box and scotch tape), and diverted the air flow away from my legs and testicles....the beauty of this HVAC design is that it now forces air to blow to the sides undearneath my desk - meaning i still get the underdesk ambient cooling, plus it now forces air vertically up through the register towards the window, where the heat transfer from the sun is occuring..

Haha!  Is this what you do in your free time?   (I am browsing forums with mine, can't say I am any more productive)  Is your job hiring by chance?   =)

This temp job I have now is kinda cushy.  I work for the government of the Salt River Indian Community.
http://www.saltriver.pima-maricopa.nsn.us/

They hired me on as a contracted network analyst for about 2 months.  They have the nice coffee machine where you put in the little individual sealed packets of various flavors and it auto-breaks the seal, brews a cup and disposes of the package in a bin.

They get cost of living increases in their salary every year depending on the average rise of CoL for the area, and they practically have unlimited funds because of their casinos, so the IT department is always training and doing projects.  However, if you are of Indian decent, or live in the community, and you have the same skills I do, they will hire you over me according to their hiring preferences.

EDIT: - I gotta change my avatar again.  Here is what it looks like up close:

Poor Arc and his mild discomfort in the work environment. Be happy there's AC and no poisonous animals in your office (with the exception of de-caf... thank God there's none where I work)

Ah I remember the old days when I worked as an engineer for the Electricity Commission on the 32nd floor of a nice air-conditioned building in the city with lovely views. Ok the occassional disruption from protestors (the American consulate was one floor above us) and the painful security checks were a bit annoying, but compared to classrooms full of smelly teenagers (phew those boys smell after playing footy all lunchtime!) I was in heaven. Yes we do have air conditioning in the classrooms, but by the time all the students have entered the room it takes half the lesson to cool down all that body heat. And that's not mentioning when the power generator doesn't become overloaded and jsut shuts down.

But on the negative side of being an Engineer- when we had to investigate boiler tube bank failures during an outage in the power stations (just after the system was shut down- and still real hot) - you would be wearing a plastic white suit (and I would wear a shower cap under my helmet because I hated coal fly-ash in my ears: couldn't do anything about the black boogers in my nose though!)- it would be dark, steaming hot and black fly-ash (like soot) would be everywhere.

But hey- there are much worse jobs out there than that. Do you guys have that TV series- "The worst jobs in history" - my kids love that show...

Here we have "Dirty Jobs," where the host goes and spends a day doing yucky things like working in a tire yard, hunting crawfish, cleaning up pig slop... it's pretty interesting but I'm glad I don't have any of those jobs :)
