Those are implants. I have a few friends who do them. Its a neat procedure to watch.

I have a friend who had magnetic implants in his fingers. He could feel magnetic fields when he passed through them, like going into a department store. They rejected and he had to take them out. (story about his experience here---> http://www.bmezine.com/news/pubring/20060401.html (http://www.bmezine.com/news/pubring/20060401.html)

I also knew a guy with a sensor in his hand that unlocked his car door! It was encased in bio-glass.

your buddy marilyn has some decent music sometimes too....

but on an anthroplogical level, it interesting to see this kind of body enhancement...tatoos are centuries old, and were predominantly reserved for lower classes economically...in the latter 20th century tattoos moved squarley into the realm of the middle and upper classes, and in a way they hijacked this 'culture', so much so that you now see every woman on the planet with a tramp stamp.

I wonder if these body modifications will go the same route one day...

Actually Arc... historically stereotyping tattoos as being of lower class is false. In many ancient cultures, having more tattoos meant you held higher standing. Refer to the Maori culture of New Zealand where you can basically tell a person's life story based on their facial tattoos along with many other Polynesian and even ancient Egyptian royalty who wore numerous elaborate tattoos in order to show off their rank in society.
It wasn't until the "sailors and hookers" era were tats thought to be only for the poor and economically disadvantaged. I think it may have something to do with puritans being our forefathers and those assholes who supported prohibition (i have a feeling that the anti-boos crowd is anti-tattoo as well)

Similarly for the Celtic cultures, JR - they used tattoos to mark what a person's position was in society, as well as proclaim their deeds to their fellows. The warriors (especially in the Pictish culture) would get blue woad tattooed on their faces and arms both to scare the enemy and proclaim to anyone who saw them what a mighty warrior they were.

Very true JR. In many cultures to this day, tattooing is a rite of passage. young men are tattooed to signify their journey into adulthood.

The dirty stares I get from the plainskins usually come from the whites. The Asian, African, and South American peoples tend to react with more wonder and appreciation. I think its because their cultures have embraced tattooing for centuries.

Body Mod will always push the envelope. As soon as something becomes common, theres always someone dreaming up some strange way to make themselves different. Until finally the strangest person will be the one with no mods at all!

I only have 2 tats, thinking of more but I'm poor :[

Anyone see the Jackass episode where Stevo-O gets the traditional Maori tattoo done with a wooden chisel and mallet looking device?
