Cogwheel crash solution that worked for me:

Turn off tooltips when you anticipate you're going to use anything with a cogwheel and back on when you want to see your tooltips again:

Macro to turn off tooltips:
/script GameTooltip.Temphide = function() GameTooltip:Hide() end; GameTooltip:SetScript("OnShow", GameTooltip.Temphide);


Macro to Turn On Tooltips:
/script GameTooltip:SetScript("OnShow", GameTooltip.Show);
