So Trent Reznor's once again proved how ahead of the curve he is when it comes to producing a new album. Last I'd heard about Ghosts, he'd written something in his blog/news post on nin.com about how he was already laying tracks down for a new album, even though Year Zero had just come out. (Which was news, given Reznor's proclivity for going years between album releases/tours... gee, reminds me of another avant garde industrial mastermind *cough*Maynard *cough*) Next thing I know, a friend of mine's away message is saying something about "NEW NINE INCH NAILS! OMG!" >.> so of course I had to check it out.

Here's what I found:

- NIN did indeed release a new album two days ago, entitled "Ghosts I - IV"
- There was ZERO advertising/promotion for it, and yet (big surprise) the official website for the album had to undergo maintenance because the servers were umm.. overloaded.
- You can buy the album (mp3, not hard-disc) for all of $5 on amazon... yes, that's all 36 tracks of it.
- HOWEVER (and here's the kicker) there is a Deluxe Edition (includes mp3 discs of the album, a data dvd, blue-ray disc, and a hardcover booklet) and an Ultra-Deluxe Limited Edition (needs to be called Super Sekrit Bonus Edition imho) version which includes everything in the first as well as vinyl versions of the album (8 of 'em), and photographs signed and numbered by Reznor. Phew. Oh yeah, prices on each run $75 and $300. And I know, had I the money to burn, I would probably be ordering the Super-Sekrit Bonus Edition - though in reality I'll just get the Deluxe Edition =P

I did end up ordering the copy off Amazon, and I have to say I'm liking what I'm hearing thusfar. The album bounces between straight instrumental (or with slight electronic additions) tracks and NIN's more traditional heavy industrial mixes. Ghosts I looks to be entirely instrumental, and I haven't been able to listen to the other three yet to know if they are the same.

So! Anyone else in the same boat I am and have the album? D'ya like it/hate it? Discuss!

I tried getting it all day yesterday from the nin site and it kept crashing.  Sometimes the page wasn't available and sometimes it would just stop in the middle of the download and that was with the lowest quality choice coming in at about 270mb.  The lossless ones are about 600mb.  I was able to purchase it but couldn't get it to download which was frustrating.

Hopefully it will be better tonight so I can listen to it while I play wow since the speakers here at work are pretty weak and I wouldn't be able to turn it up enough to hear all the details.  I'm guessing it's going to be kind of like what he did with the Fragile, which a lot of people didn't like but I enjoy more as I listen to it.

Yeah when I went to bed last night the site was still down for maintenance. Dunno if it's back up yet though. I've since had a chance to listen to the entire album and MY GOD I like it. Great balance of content for each "part" of the album - and it's great ambiance music if you just want to work on something =)

So I downloaded the free one and it's all musical. And are more "Quake"ish the original sound track that he made. Kind of like A Warm Place. The other songs more like this?

There's a different feel to the other albums, but yeah Nix - they're all instrumental. =P Great ambiance music for level-grinding imo
