Close enough... it literally means "Left" in the Latin.  Roman armies always set out on their right feet, and men carrying their new brides over the threshold of their homes would always cross with the right foot.  Love that superstition!

Hehe, awesome. I like learning about the superstitions of various cultures/social groups. Take theatre for example!
- no whistling (fly-men used to be sailors who used whistles to communicate... you stand the chance of having a set-piece or a drape flown in on your head!)
- always always ALWAYS have a ghostlight when there is no one in the theatre
- one of the dance instructors always makes her dancers touch all four edges of the Marley in an 'X' formation during warm-ups - says it brings good luck
- again in dance: "bonne merde" before every show
