Do you all remember when we were all low levels and didnt understand basic lingo like DPS, tank, VW. but by mid 20's you would hope that you would know them.
While in a half PuG to SFK, we met two moronic players, a warlock and warrior.
The warlock was a level 20, but still struggled with VW, and summoning ( she thought that summons worked on a 50/50 chance that a summon will work or not work. ).
The warrior struggled with terms like tank, and pull. As me and theem were both 70's but playing on alts, we were shell shocked and astounded at the level of ignorance and misinformation displayed byt he lock and warr. But i didnt tell either of them how to play their class. to be honest, ppl that tell other players how to play their class are just jerks, so i refrained from doing so.

But i was still shocked by the fact that warr didnt understand the term TANK, or sunder/taunt to keep aggro (yes, he questioned me at that too)

But we cleared the courtyard in SFK, and the warr and lock nicked off saying some poor excuses like guild needed them or something.

And even travelling from the Wetlands to Silverpine ( stopping at Refugee's Point and SS to get FP's ) there were continuisly complaining about the long walk, the fact that mobs were in the 30's. it was enough to try and kill them, seriously.

Look at it like this...at least they know how to move

Wow attracts alot of first time MMORPG players and also younger players. Lowbie warriors are notorious for not having the slightest idea about generating hate, and 90% of the other sapects of their class. Alot of first timers pick warrior because of the seeming "simplicity" of the class, and they find out it just isnt so. Give them time, yeah they are mid 20's, if it's their first toon they still wouldnt know really anything about their class let alone other classes and how classes interact with each other. As long as they arent being snooty and open to sugesstions I think its fine. Remember as well first timers who ask other high level players for class role and build sugesstions get shunned and told to "stfu nub". Generally the WoW community isnt a hospitable one, especially to starting players. Their complaining is uncalled for, but it sounds like they had no idea what they were getting into.

Have to agree with Yak. In all honesty this is my first MMO in many years playing on MUD's years and years ago off and on. My how things change...but anyhow...

New people in this game tend to get ignored and shunned a lot. Its not often they find instruction and suggestion at least in the way of speaking to them and not at them. General chat is awful about that stuff, everyone who generally takes place there and the trade channel regularly tends to be a self proclaimed WoW expert and most dont have a clue what they are talking about, only how to regurgitate what theyve been told by other people of the same mentality.

Stupid notions like "Druids cant tank" "Balance druids cant out DPS mages" "Shadow priests cant heal" all come from those individuals and keep getting perpetuated in the game because of the "Book of WoW only 1 way to play a class" mindset of the majority. Because of that, new players sometimes get sucked into that and believe it to be true since they know no better and will make comments to the like.

I dont like telling people how to play their class myself either, nor do I like being told to, but theres a difference between telling someone and suggesting to someone. It all goes back to what I said about talking to someone and not at someone.

When you talk to them, you offer up suggestions on methods to improve and compliment them on anything they've done on their own positive. Talking "at" someone is where people insult you, call you "n00b" say things like "lrn2play" and so on but dont give you suggestion or rather dictate to you what you should be doing based on their ideas. The latter is a sure fire way to irritate someone and get them to not listen.

They may be players like me- who rarely get to group or do instances :)
And I've never played a game like wow before- so am a true noob :)
I was grateful when guildies told me about how a tank should play-
I hated the pug groups who blamed the healer or the tank whenever they wiped. They usually never offered any constructive advise either.

I had a level 70 healadin from a major raid guild tell me druids cant tank in a BM pug last night...think he just started too? :P

My first MMO (after MUDs) was CoH.  I still remember how green I was when I came to WoW.  I had a very basic understanding of how MMO's worked, but that's about it.  It doesn't surprise me at all that new players would not understand any of the underlying mechanics of the game.  I know I certainly didn't until I did a lot of research.

It's always tough to educate by chat - partly because what may be intended as constructive criticism or suggestion comes across as belittlement or insult.  It's hard to convey the nuance of meaning via typed words in a video game, particularly with younger players who are probably apt to be more defensive and easily offended.  And although you may know what you're talking about, a random player in a pug doesn't know that - to him/her, you're just another low-level player in a pug with no more credibility than anyone else.

Khanus

There's always the exception arc, he was most likely one of the people who tell lowbies to "L2p nub". You can't get around the fact that alot of asshats are floating around in wow as well. Some people act differently when behind a computer, they can act how they want with almost no repercussions and without any threat of physical harm. This empowers some people to be total jerks.

There is nothing wrong with helping people to play their class, especially if it is their first time playing the game.  I was lucky to come into the game with friends who knew a lot already that helped guide me through all of the basics, and there are A LOT of basics in WoW that we all take for granted now.  I have a friend with a 35 warrior who just barely finished his quests for Defensive and Berzerker stances...  It doesn't mean that he sucks or that he is a moron, he just had no idea.

I've created plenty of alts to try to figure out how other classes work, mostly after getting frustrated from PVP, but mainly to understand how to better lead raids and use proper class combinations to the party's benefit.  There is always going to be something to learn in this game so we should all be helpful to those who just have no idea by sharing what we have learned.   There is definitely a communication gap if you only type what you're trying to say (this is one of my biggest frustrations) but all you can do is offer the help, those lowbies will definitely remember the kindness.

Arcdelad

if your warrior friend is who i think it is, maybe saying hes not a moron is a little unfactual...80's hair forever!!!!

Muridin

i undertand all of what has been said. and at times when presented with questions, i answered them nicely, and i didnt say "lrn2play nub".

when i first started playing, it was my first mmo ever, and i was a complete jackass at times, and i surpose i forgot that.

fiere redfern

When I was a low level I didn't realize for the longest time that VC and DM were the same thing... only realized later on why that particular instance HAD two names.

This is the first MMO that I've seriously played (been addicted to, fine).  I started out as a craptastic hunter... then a pally... then I rerolled priest.  Funny, putting 10 talent points into every talent tree doesn't get you anywhere...

Luise

Hey Fiere- my then 10 year old told me about VC  :)
And where would I be without all the kind patient replies of guildies answering my nube questions- especially when I asked the same questions. Particular thanks go to Shadow, Grendeel and TB.

P.S. lol- Im still asking  ;)

I explored Auch... however you spell it...and found 4 instances to do- Crypts, Shadow Labs, Mana.., and...(whatsitsname)- any alts that havent done those- I'd love to check them out sometime. I got a quest to talk to a guy - could see the gold dot- but don't have the key- very frustrating.

Arcdelad

the auchendoun instances are pretty fun luise...sethekk and auchenei crypts get swept under the rug a lot though...sethekk should be done by everyone at least once so you can get the shadow labs key off the final boss...auchenei crypts IMO is pretty boring....
