I'm in a slump with respect to music these days, the last song I got being Anna Molly by Incubus.  I have two albums that I believe are the eptiome of musical brilliance.  Stadium Arcadium by the Red Hot Chili Peppers (John Frusciante is a master) and Siren Song of the Counter Culture (nuff said).  Almost anything by the Chili Peppers is amazing.

If you really like the Chilis i would recommend the following:

Parliament (George Clinton & Bootsy Collins, crazy 70's funk)
Stevie Wonder (his 70s funk stuff like "Sir Duke" = amazing)
Infectious Grooves ( late 80's early 90's Rob Truillo awesome bassist now plays for Metallica)
Primus (Sailing the Seas of Cheese wild mix of funk, progressive, and alternative)

If you havent heard RHCP's early cds grab "The Uplift Mofo Party Plan"

As for personal recommedations:

Some of my all time faves:
Super Furry Animals "Rings Around the World" (Welsh band mixes rock and electro-pop)
Beatles "Abbey Road" (listen to side 2 first though)
Stone Roses "ST" (gave birth to "brit-pop")
The Who "Who's Next" (huge rock record)
Andrew W.K. "I Get Wet" (pure adrenaline rush for 45 minutes)
Dropkick Murphy's "Sing Loud, Sing Proud" (Boston punk with Irish traditional influence)

As for current releases I would check out the new records from:

Kaiser Chiefs
The Good, The Bad, & The Queen
Arcade Fire
Modest Mouse

one of my all time favorite CDs is by Australia's queen of Yodeling "Mary Schnieder". Her CD "yodeling the classics" is unreal. The "Clarinet Polka Yodel" makes me crazy. In fact here is a clip:

pay no attention to the girl in this video as its not the real Mary Schnieder, but this is the only clip i could find online. close your eyes, listen and enjoy!

Who is Jimmy Barnes? Ill take 80s titles for 400 Alex. =)

As for my list:

Bruce Hornsby and the Range - The Way It Is (I grew up on the streets of Philly, NJ and NY and this song just brings back the positive memories somehow)
Aerosmith - Dream On w/ Orchestrial backup (was on a music awards special, Grammys or something years back, the NY Philharmonic played the background....wow)
U2 (im a fan of the older stuff, the newer stuff is ok, but I like the classic U2 from the 90s and back)
.38 Special - Hold on Loosely (classic)
The Who - Baba O'Riley (yet another classic, people mistake the name for "Teenage Wasteland" but thats not the title)
Yello - Oh Yea (c'mon, Ferris Bueller made this song)
Queen (group pumped out a lot of good songs, too many to list as well)
Boston - More Than a Feeling
Huey Lewis And The News - Power Of Love (and more, these guys had a lot of good stuff)
Eagles - Hotel California (OMG who doesnt know this one)
Bruce Springsteen (Jersey Girl, Rosalita, Born To Run)
Paul Simon - You Can Call Me Al (hilarious video with Chevy Chase and a lot of his music is unique as he travels the world for inspiration)

(im a HUGE fan of the 50's music)
Chuck Berry - Johnny B. Goode
Elvis
The Four Tops
Silhouettes
Smokey Robinson

Now for the more modern stuffs
Counting Crows (Big Yellow Taxi, Round Here, Einstein on the Beach, Baby Im a Big Star Now)
Linkin Park
Bowling For Soup
The Offspring (met Dexter and the crew at MTV SMF3D years back in Las Vegas, nice bunch of guys and they can make some tunes)
The Killers (Mr Brightside, All These Things That Ive Done, When You Were Young, Somebody Told Me)
Weezer
Jamiroquai (Virtual Insanity, Canned Heat)
Death Cab For Cutie
Poe (Angry Johnnie, Hey Pretty)
The Fray

Reel Big Fish

Then theres the orchestral / instrumental and crooners:

Bobby Darin

All time favorite band tho has to be

Come to the darkside, we have cookies.
"A flute with no holes is not a flute, and a donut with no hole is a danish" - Chevy Chase as Ty Webb in Caddyshack
"Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind."- Dr. Suess

Interesting selections folks! Shadow, I have to say I agree with a lot of your choices. I saw .38 Special open for Molly Hatchet right as Hold On Loosely was hitting the airwaves. Great song and yes, I'm ancient. I also like a bunch of 50s music; Del Shannon was always one of my favorites...

Older songs:

Bruce Springsteen - Thunder Road (live version with Bruce playing piano)
The Who - Eminence Front
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - Woman in Love
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here (plus most songs on The Wall and The Final Cut)
Jimmy Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower
Ted Nugent - Stranglehold
Ten Years After - I'm Going Home
Styx - Crystal Ball
Dire Straits - just about everything, especially anything from the Making Movies album

Currently listening to:

Drive By Truckers - if you love southern rock, these guys are the real deal! Check out The Dirty South and/or Decoration Day
Robert Earl Keen - I recommend his #2 Live Diner, Farm Fresh Onions and Walking Distance cds
Reckless Kelly
Jame McMurtry - Childish Things cd
Shawn Mullins
Darryl Scott - Theatre of the Unheard cd
Paul Thorn - Ain't Love Strange cd
Audioslave - Out of Exile cd

I'm all over the place. I also enjoy some of the newer Alternative and some Celtic music as well. Been known to put on some metal, too...but not as much now as I used to. ;)

Doh! I cant believe I forgot Tom Petty and Styx.

I agree with lots on the list so just too add some of my favorites.

Absolutely the Eagles...Which group has the balls to start the reunion tour with there Signature song (Hotel California) as the first song and still pull of the rest of the concert.  Beatles or Stones yea, but you will always have an argument, discussion about which is "The" song with those groups.  I'm not putting the Eagles with the Beatles or Stones but with the Eagles, no questions which is "THE" song for them.

Cowboy Junkies...Canadian group that gets plugged into the Alternative Music grouping...I just like them.  I recommend the albums as a whole rather then just one song or another. They have one or two upbeat songs in most of the album to satisfy the record companys for radio play but Cowboy Junkies are more known for slow dark melodies.

Susan Tedeschi...a whole lot of Janis in her.  She has some nice old Blues remakes and nice balance of new material in her albums, especially in "Just Won't Burn" album. I was lucky enough to catch her at the Boom Boom Room in San Francisco just as she was getting playtime on the radio.  Six month later she was back at The Fillmore across the street from the Boom Boom room to a sold out crowd.

Yeah, they're good... Jessie Cook is my favorite of the three.  They do more modern things though, and I prefer the traditional, more gypsy flamenco.  I'm a flamenco guitarist, if you didn't know already ;)

Paco de Lucia is an absolute must... he's quite possibly the best guitarist ever.  Antonio Moya is an outstanding contemporary guitarist too.  After that, look for collections by singers, because they work with a variety of guitarists. José Mercé, Enrique Morente, Diego El Cigala, Camarón de la Isla, José Menese... the list goes on. :)
