Time to find a new ISP, so tired of this, its Comcast again... >:(

Some stuff works, other stuff doesnt. Yahoo, this site and a most others work. MSN.com, cnn.com, worldofwarcraft.com, etc dont.

And phone support...

"Sorry, I dont know, I just know we have a lot of calls from your area in the last 45min and all I can do is send a ticket to your local service center."

It really disgusts me to see these large corporations have no redundancy built into their networks at all. With the amount of dollars brought in on subscriptions and monthly fees there is more than ample funding to incorporate fail safes to avoid this type of thing yet hardly any company does it and it boggles the mind. By the time they fix this and they hand out the refunds/free days that all the affected customers will be demanding, they will have paid for what it would have cost for putting in this type of redundancy.

I just cant figure out how does a nationwide ISP like Comcast with so many subscribers can get away with not doing the most basic of network setups.

Atop that I cant understand why we can choose our own phone company yet we are forced into what cable company we can have. Some serious monopoly issues with that.

Almost 9hrs since I reported the problem and its still down. I even got an automated call telling me it was fixed 2hrs ago and it wasnt, when I called in to complain the girl told me she didnt know why that call went out because its not fixed and they still dont know when it will be =P

What's even more ridiculous is that when I interviewed for a PM's assistant internship at Comcast's NE Philly office, my interviewer told me that Comcast's networks were completely overtaxed because they were trying to keep customers away from Verizon. For their cable network, a single cable repeater is designed to service only 200 homes - some of the repeaters are sending signal to 10 times that. =/

The kicker is that this guy was supposed to be telling me how great and wonderful the company was - and all he could give me were a few snide remarks about how Comcast's "big corporation" mindset was screwing over the customers they were servicing.

I found out what happened today. For a period of 10-11 hours a key router for NY, NJ and PA died and they had no backup system to automatically switch over to.

So essentially, 3 states of customers were dead and could do nothing on the net for 10 hours. Thats some fantastic ISP service.

From SlickDeals.net:

QuoteHey everyone that has Comcast -

If you are like me, you are pretty tired of having Comcast constantly raise your price on everything from DVRs to premium channels to even the freaking remote control! My remote control went from 20 cents to 25 cents a month this year (what a joke)

Anyway, Comcast has been experiencing a HUGE outage in 7 states for most of today. They are having a DNS problem which makes it difficult to go to most places online. Call Comcast billing to get your refund for today (and maybe again tomorrow as the Comcast reps are saying that they HOPE the problem can be resolved today)

Most states make Comcast customers call in to get the refund. While it may only be 3 or 4 dollars, it is worth it if everyone does it.

So please call Comcast billing and request your refund if you have the high speed connection. And get your friends and family to call too. I called and have been refunded for today already.

1-800-COMCAST

If this is in the wrong forum please move it. Thanks for reading

have you requested your refund?

Shadowwolf

Yes, I got told "it might take a while for someone to get back to you, im sure theres a lot of complaints"

Sorry to hear about the net troubles.  Comcast has a history (with me at least) of blaming the customer when they know damn well it's their problem.  It was so bad at one time that it took Corporate HQ to declare my area a disaster and fly in some expert techs to fix it (after 6 months of constant complaints by most customers).

I consider myself to have moved to "the boonies" and yet here I have my choice of cable carrier and later this year I am scheduled to have fiber to the house installed (which I will jump ship to asap).   :)

I hear Trader Joe's will be opening a store in Nashville soon, too.  Woot!
No matter how often you refill the gene pool, there's always a shallow end.

In Portland, we've got fiber from Verizon and fiber from Comcast, so the monoploly is relatively gone from this area now.  I would imagine everyone will have both as options, although it may take some time to get there.  As odd as this sounds, I've had nothing but pleasant experiences with Comcast customer support when I needed it.

And, yes, we purchased both (my wife's company pays for the Verizon line).

The Philadelphia city proper is pretty terrible. For cable/internet we have Comcast - except if you live in certain buildings that already have a deal with Hotwire or use the "WirelessPhiladelphia" network (which has gotten a lot better). Verizon is sneaking in its FiOS network, but it is far from complete.

And then of course you could ignore all the earth-bound networks and go satellite... but be prepared to pay about 100 bucks a month for HughesNet and another 60 or so (depending on the package) for DirecTV. =P

Philly isnt so bad fiere :) im using Verizon and not even Fios and its pretty damn reliable (except for that late night Mgt run lol)...i dont have any complaints...

my old boss in chicago had comcast and it didnt let him play wow for like 1.5 months, so he switched to DSL...i think comcast has a combative attitude towards WOW...i know i certainly wont use them....

But you're not living in the city itself, Arc =P The 'burbs have their choice of Verizon or Comcast cuz that's where the money's at, but for those of us who live from 69th to 2nd and from South to Girard, it's Comcast or nothing =/

Arcdelad

hehe...my address says i live in philadelphia!

...course....im literally 1 block from not being in philly, but im still technically a resident of the city of philadelphia! Chestnut Hill FTL - all the greatness of the burbs + the 4.5% out of your paycheck for living in philly...
